The Atchafalaya Basin, renowned as the largest wetland in the United States, is on the path to becoming Louisiana’s first National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR). This designation will enhance our understanding and stewardship of this vital ecosystem.

What is a National Estuarine Research Reserve?

National Estuarine Research Reserves are protected areas established for long-term research, education, and coastal stewardship. They are partnerships between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and coastal states.

The Journey to Designation

In June 2022, Governor John Bel Edwards announced support for nominating the Atchafalaya Basin as a NERR. Following this, NOAA and the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) initiated public scoping meetings to gather input for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS). The designation process involves evaluating potential sites, finalizing a nomination, and developing a comprehensive management plan.

Community Engagement

St. Mary Excel has been instrumental in advocating for the ANERR designation. In December 2020, the Morgan City Council passed a resolution supporting the establishment of the reserve in the Atchafalaya Estuarine Zone. This move underscores the community’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Friends of the Atchafalaya

To further community involvement, the non-profit organization Friends of the Atchafalaya has been established. This group aims to support the reserve through education, outreach, and volunteer initiatives.
